Get This Woman Some Smelling Salts!

NYT's Edward Rothstein gives Presidents House, the newly opened historical display meant to showcase slavery in early America Philadelphia under slaveholder Gen. George Washington, a negative (but informative) review.

And Philly Daily News columnist Annette John-Hall reacts as if Rothstein were some white-robe wearing bigot intent on diminishing the horror of slavery.
Made the mistake of ringing in 2011 by reading a story in the New York Times that felt like a backhand across the face.

That's how much it stung.

Times arts critic Edward Rothstein, in a callous and arrogant piece about the recently opened President's House exhibit on Independence Mall, lamely attempts to argue that my history - truly, all of our history - is too narrow and, by extension, doesn't really matter.
Read it all. Then read Rothstein's critique, which does no such thing.

It does includes this:
Here, though, we get neither a sense of the place, nor a sense of the issues (and much of the year, the open air will be inhospitable). We don’t learn about the differences between Washington and Adams. We don’t learn much about the pictured events. There is no real narrative. Illustrations can also be melodramatically contentious: we see a seemingly disdainful Washington dangling a “peace medal” before a suspicious Seneca Indian leader

As for slave life, it is also difficult to piece together. The video screens that come to life above the fake mantels give the impression of a half-finished 21st-century home. The videos themselves (with scripts by Lorene Cary), in which slaves and servants provide first-person accounts of experiences, at least provide some sense of life. But how do we put these experiences in context? What was Philadelphia’s free black community like? How did white workers and black slaves live together here?

We are told that the President’s House “offers an opportunity to draw lessons from the past.” But what lessons? That Washington was flawed? That slavery was an abomination? Are these revelations? A memorial to the practice of slavery is mounted here, inscribed with the names of African tribes from which slaves derived, but it has no particular relationship to Philadelphia or this site. The need for some such memorial is keen, but here it seems thumped down as an intrusion.
If Ms. John-Hall felt slapped silly by that, she needs headgear and a concussion test before she is allowed to write again.

Sass&Bide and the crystal studs

Sass and Bide blush tank with removable clear spike dome stud embellished shoulder harness.

Hey,this tank got my attention!Of course for the clear stud embellishment that as i read it's removable,i'm asking why?If you're brave enought to buy this top at this painful price you can't reduce it to a boring top.

This top is aggressive but it's nastiness is softened by the satin pink and the clear spikes, i love shoulders embellishments and i think it's very easily diyable as long as we can find the clear studs.

Three Things I Learned from the Bill James Handbook

If you haven't caught on yet, I got the 2011 Edition of the Bill James Handbook this week. Here's some nuggets from 2010 I've uncovered.

1. Nick Markakis Has a Very Specific Set of Skills

While I have given up on Markakis becoming a star player, he does still do many good things at the plate. Persusing the AL leader boards, Markakis is in the top ten in hits (5th with 187), doubles (tied for 4th with 45) and singles (tied for 9th with 127).

He also hit .338 with runners in scoring position (7th in the AL). Oddly enough, he was 2nd in batting average against left handed pitching (.361), 4th in OBP against lefties (.415) and, not surprisingly, had the 2nd highest OPS for a lefty versus lefty pitching (.906). That is really not typical for Markakis who usually makes his hay against RHP, as you would expect.

He was also 5th in the AL in pitches seen and 10th in lowest first swing percentage.

He may not be a star but he's still a pretty good hitter.

2. Getting On Base Against Jeremy Guthrie is Really Hard

Batters only got on base at a .298 clip against Jeremy Guthrie in 2010. That was 10th best in the AL and puts him in a top ten that includes David Price, Justin Verlander and Dallas Braden. This prompted me to see who was the best at preventing runners from getting on base over the past four seasons:

Opponent OBP
R. Halladay .289
C. Lee .294
C. Sabathia .297
J. Weaver .301
F. Hernandez .304
J. Beckett .306
S. Baker .308
J. Verlander .308
J. Guthrie .310
J. Shields .310

That's pretty good company. And it probably explains a lot about how Guthrie is able to outperform his peripherals every year.

3. The Orioles' Two Best Fielders Probably Aren't Who You Think They Are

In terms of Runs Saved, the best showing from a regular fielder was...Felix Pie. This is not a surprise to some but the "Felix Pie looks lost in left field" reputation has been tough for him to shake. But Pie was credited with 6 Runs Saved, good for 5th among all left fielders in baseball, in only 70 games. Double that for 140 games and the 12 Runs Saved would put him right behind the likes of Brett Gardner (13) and Carl Crawford (14). He's one of he best fielding outfielders in baseball. It's time to retire the notion that he's not.

The best fielder in terms of John Dewans' +/- system was...Brad Bergesen. Brad scored +6 on that system among all pitchers and on the list of 3-year leaders, Bergesen scores +13, just two points behind the leader, Jake Westbrook...and Brad only played a year and a half of those three years.

Bergesen needs to do all the little things to succeed in the majors and when it comes to fielding his position, he certainly does.

Welcome to Lawyerland

Philadelphia ranks as the No. 1 "judicial hellhole" in the country thanks to allowing lawsuits like this one go forward.
Magolon claims she was so traumatized by the incident that she can no longer work. She is now seeking damages in excess of $50,000 “plus delay damages, punitive damages, costs, interest and other damages permitted by law.”

Magolon says she has flashbacks, nausea, cold sweats, insomnia, nightmares and digestive problems that are preventing her from attending her usual duties and occupation, causing her great financial detriment and loss.
All because Donald Duck allegedly touched her breast at Epcot.
